The Sustainability Research Hub is most interested in working with environmental sustainability-related projects that meet at least two of the following criteria: large, interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary, facilitate new research, create new collaborations, and/or support emerging investigators. We offer a variety of services to campus researchers aimed at facilitating large-scale research grant applications. There is no cost for these services, and indirect cost funding will be retained by researchers’ own departments or units.
The Hub works with researchers and practitioners to reduce administrative burden, facilitate collaboration, identify opportunities, and help bring more sustainability research to campus. The Hub is happy to work together with any staff in your department, school, or college to help give your project the greatest chance of success. See below for details on the types of support we offer.
Ready to work with the Hub? Please CONNECT with our team so we can learn more about you and your project. All engagements are unique, so in an initial meeting we’ll explore questions about scope, scale, collaborators, and funding details.
Not sure if your project qualifies? Just tell us a little bit about your project and someone will reach out to learn more. You can also email our team at hub@sustainability.wisc.edu.

Collaboration 'Matchmaking'
Through our extensive knowledge of sustainability research both on and off campus, the Hub can help identify research partners or project collaborators. Once we understand your project idea, our team will make introductions to others who might be able to provide their expertise to the project. The Hub can also facilitate initial meetings, foster new connections, and help you build networks on campus and beyond.
Grant Writing and Proposal Development
Our grant writing team is here to help maximize your chances of success through compelling, clearly written, well organized proposals. Our grant writing team can assist by coalescing the various components from multiple research partners and working with the Hub’s graphic design and/or data visualization team members to ensure a cohesive and powerful proposal. We provide assistance and guidance throughout the entire planning and development process to ensure proposals are as strong and competitive as possible.
Project Coordination
Hub staff can provide project management and team coordination during the writing phase to ensure that your proposal stays on track. We can create project plans; timelines; checklists; and meeting planning and facilitation. Together with the PIs, we can ensure that the team can provide all the technical and administrative components needed for a successful application.
Proofreading and Editing
For large sustainability grants, the Hub offers comprehensive proofreading and editing services. In addition to ensuring that your proposal is error free, we can help edit for clarity, to meet page limits, and to ensure that all required components are included.
Data Visualization and Graphics
As the saying goes, ‘A picture is worth a thousand words’ and sometimes your grant proposal is a thousand words over the limit. Our data visualization expert can work with you to design ways to present your background, proposed work, research methodologies, and expected results in as effective a manner as possible. We can elevate submissions with compelling graphics to bring clarity to concepts and make the end product more succinct and persuasive.
Budget Preparation, Proposal Submission, and Administration
For proposals submitted through the Hub, our Research Administrator can assist with coordination and timely submission from start to finish. This features facilitating collaboration between multiple departments, investigators, and/or institutions for the proposal timeline; budget development; ensuring compliance with sponsor requirements; and routing and approvals through internal and external systems.
On awards generated from Hub submitted proposals, our team can provide high level post-award support services such as award monitoring and oversight; assistance with closeouts; reporting; and modifications such as no-cost extensions, budget review, and supplements.
